PK Carsport set for EuroNASCAR comeback? “It looks good!”
PK Carsport has made its comeback to EuroNASCAR at Circuit Zolder – The team from Belgium is planning a full-time return for the 2022 season
PK Carsport has retired as a full-time team in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series (NWES) after the 2020 season and only contested its home race at Circuit Zolder in Belgium in 2021. The reason for this is the time-intensive other racing programs of the racing team. In 2022, the Belgians can envision a full-time return to EuroNASCAR.
“We have too many programs this year and too much overlap,” team principal Anthony Kumpen told ‘Leadlap.net’. “So we decided to race only this weekend in Zolder – our home race.” PK Carsport did just that with flying colors, as Stienes Longin won Saturday’s race with a dominant performance while also recording his third career EuroNASCAR PRO victory.
Next year, the top team could be back on the grid at all NWES races. As Kumpen confirms, everything is already in place for this. “Now we are negotiating with the drivers and with the sponsors,” said the two-time NWES champion. “So there is a good chance that we will return next year with two cars.”
Longin also facing comeback
Longin, too, could then compete in all the races again and play a role in the championship battle. However, he stresses that a few details would have to be sorted out before a one hundred percent commitment could be made. Longin has competed in 48 EuroNASCAR PRO and 28 EuroNASCAR 2 races so far in his career. In 2016, he won the EuroNASCAR 2 title.
But what are the actual details that Longin needs to sort out before signing his contract? He told ‘Leadlap.net’: “The sponsors have to decide if they want to be involved again or not. We’ll see.” In addition, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic also plays an important role in the plans of the 30-year-old from Leuven.
PK Carsport is one of the most successful teams in NWES history. Team boss Kumpen has won the EuroNASCAR PRO title twice himself. In 2020, the team won together with Alon Day, who grabbed his third title. Longin is so far the only EuroNASCAR 2 champion of the successful racing team, which also competes in the sports car and GT races.
